Chapter Twenty-Five

Iknow too much. I know what she did to him, and I have no desire to meet the woman who cheated on Callen with his cousin. It may have been years ago, but his reaction to her presence seems like a prequel to an uncomfortable moment about to commence.

“Hey, Mia, is it okay if Sawyer and I go look at the lights?” I ask.

“Sure. As long as you don’t mind taking him.”

“Not at all. He’s a doll.”

Callen looks at me with a blank expression, as though he’s already ready for Kacey to join the group, and he’s trying not to react. The joyful man who was playing with Sawyer is gone.

I give his arm a light touch. “We’ll be back.”

I’m only two steps away when I hear her speak. “Hey, Mia. Hey, Daisy. Happy Fourth.”

As much as I would like to stay nearby and listen, her lighthearted tone makes me want to puke. Like she can just breeze on in like nothing ever happened. I force myself to keep walking to the edge of the property behind the food tables where the lights are strung. Connected by tall stakes in the ground, they’re right above our heads, and Sawyer lifts his hand to touch them, but they’re out of his reach.

Turning us so we’re facing what seems like must be most of the town’s population. My heart skips a beat when I spot Callen still standing with the group, turned away and watching us. When I say turned away, I don’t mean he’s angled his body so he could see us. I mean, he has turned his back on everyone and is watching me.

If I weren’t holding this baby, I’d be showing him exactly what I think of this just friends farce. It’s obvious we’re both going through the motions. Pretending. Because Callen watching me, watch him, watching me is one of the hottest moments of my life. Almost as hot as him ordering me to spread my thighs on the cabin table.

There is something about his intent focus on me that gets me going.

He certainly isn’t hiding what we both know is true. We will always be much more than friends.

Kacey walks away from the group, heading for the keg, and as Sawyer and I start back toward his mom and Callen, I can’t help but watch her. She’s tall and thin with a pale complexion and long black hair. Wearing a tight white tank, jeans, and cowboy boots, she looks like she belongs here.

Callen meets me halfway, standing close and rubbing the back of the little man in my arms. “Hey, big guy. How were the lights?”

Watching his natural disposition with the baby penetrates a maternal corner of my heart that I never realized existed until tonight. This man surprises me every day. His carefree honesty and bossiness in the bedroom had me at hello during our lost weekend, but since I’ve been here, I’ve discovered new pieces of him that only make me want him more.

“He’s such a sweetie.
